Officially incorporated on July 1, 1999, Oakley stands as one of California’s youngest cities and the newest incorporated municipality in Contra Costa County. The city’s name derives from the abundance of oak trees that historically dotted the meadows throughout this region—”Oakley” literally means “meadow of oak trees” in Old English, perfectly describing the landscape when first settled.
The city nearly bore a different name entirely. According to Oakley’s founding story, city founder Randolph Marsh wanted to name the community “Dewey” after Admiral Dewey, honoring his victory at the Battle of Manila Bay during the Spanish-American War. However, his friend J.T. Whightman preferred “Oakley” because the terrain consisted largely of meadows and oaks. The two men settled their dispute over a game of cribbage—Marsh lost the game and the naming rights, but ensured his lasting legacy by choosing downtown street names whose first initials spell “MARSH”: Main, Acme, Ruby, Star, and Home.
